News

The amazing LSO flute section included my trio Interlaced in their concert at St Luke’s in London recently. Fantastic playing, as you’d expect! It is up on Youtube and you can hear the whole concert here. I was performing in a Red Note project in the highlands at Boat of Garten at the time, so listened to the live-stream from a sunny park in Aviemore!

My latest piece Reef was broadcast by BBC Radio 3 New Music Show recently, and I am nearly finished writing The Day is Done for flute and voice which will be premiered at the Scottish International Flute Summer School in July. This year we will celebrate 30 year of the course!

Red Note Ensemble

Red Note is Scotland’s contemporary music ensemble. We are the Associate Contemporary Ensemble at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Associate Ensemble at Sound Festival, Aberdeen

Recent work has included recording music by Jane Stanley and James Dillon for the amazing Delphian label. We’ve been featured on Radio Scotland’s Classical Now programme. We’ve been performing at Sound, Nordic Music Days, Lammermuir, Edinburgh and Huddersfield festivals and broadcasting for BBCRadio 3. AND our Easterhouse Childrens’ Manifesto project with Brian Irvine won an Ivor Novello Award!

I have always loved the process of developing new work with composers. Seeing a new piece come to life never gets old. www.rednoteensemble.com

Teaching

Teaching has always been a big part of my life as a musician. I am Lecturer in flute at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) where I enjoy teaching students from all over the world.

Back in 1996 I set up the Scottish International Flute Summer School and I ran the first course with Peter Lloyd in St Andrews that summer. I was the director for 20 years, and it has grown into one of the leading flute courses in the world. I still enjoy teaching on the course which is an amazing meeting point for flute players, both students and teaching colleagues.
